When I was driving a cab for Fort Myers Florida airport (RSW), this was the question I got the most. People coming from all parts of the USA and other parts of the world wanted to know what locals do for fun. I had to explain to them, that living in Florida doesn't mean that I can go to the beach every day. Actually we have to plan it and enforce it ruthlessly to get there.
Sunset on Cape Coral Beach
The reason is that we all have to work for living (yes even in Florida) and we know that the beach will be there next weekend too so why not postpone it and do something more useful. Like watch TV. Yes, we are all just lazy people by nature.
Back to my passengers. Even though they usually had their plans ready, I usually gave them tip or two where to go, eat, shop etc. They listened carefully for insider tips of local cab driver. Of course they wanted to get the most of their vacation.
Some of them were really disappointed though that there are no shopping opportunities on remote Captiva Island. And they were going to stay there for whole week! Imagine that! No McDonald's, JC Penney, nothing like that. Just beautiful beaches and small island atmosphere.
What a terrible island, eh? :-)
When my passengers were locals living in Fort Myers Florida for decades, then I listened and asked questions. I learned from them. Some had a lot to say.
When I travel I do the same. For some reason the cab drivers do know the most about area where they live and drive. After all it makes sense. All they do is drive around, talk to people and collect local gossips. Who else should know ?
And that is why I decided to write this guide. Cab driver guide. To give useful tips to more visitors of Fort Myers Florida. Because not everyone hires a cab. Some people rent a car and go directly to their destination.
Other reason is that I don't drive a cab anymore. And I know that not all cab drivers are nice to people. Some are actually pretty rude. I enjoyed talking to people. Use this guide as you wish. I will try my best to show you the nicest beaches in southwest Florida. I will tell you about great restaurants and shopping centers. Where to see dolphins play and where to take nicest pictures of tropical sunset.
